Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – A tragic stampede-like situation at the Mahakumbh Mela in Mahakumbh Nagar, Prayagraj, on Mauni Amavasya has left at least 15 people feared dead and several others injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning (January 29, 2025) as lakhs of devotees gathered at the Sangam Ghat for the auspicious holy dip in the Ganga.
According to initial reports, nearly 15 dead bodies have been brought to the hospital, while the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed by the authorities. The injured have been rushed to the central hospital inside the Mela premises for urgent medical care.
Massive Crowds Lead to Stampede at Sangam Ghat
The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, witnessed an unprecedented surge of devotees on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a day considered highly auspicious for taking a dip in the holy Ganga. Despite stringent crowd control measures, including hundreds of surveillance cameras, AI-driven crowd monitoring, and drone surveillance, the overwhelming crowd led to chaos near Sangam Nose.
According to Special Executive Officer Akanksha Rana, “A stampede-like situation arose after some barriers broke. Some people have been injured. They are under treatment. It is not a serious situation.”
PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath Review the Situation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken twice within an hour to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to review the situation and ensure swift relief efforts. UP CM Yogi Adityanath has urged devotees not to move towards Sangam Nose and instead take a dip at alternative ghats near Maa Ganga to avoid further crowding.
Ambulances and rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the affected areas, ensuring that the injured were provided immediate medical assistance. Authorities have also launched an investigation into the cause of the stampede at Mahakumbh Mela and are working on identifying lapses in crowd management.
Akharas Call Off Amrit Snan
Following the tragic incident, various Akhara saints and spiritual leaders have announced the cancellation of the Amrit Snan, which was scheduled for January 29, 2025. Spiritual leaders have urged devotees to temporarily avoid visiting Sangam Ghat to prevent further crowd surges and ensure safety.
Crowd Management at Mahakumbh Mela Under Scrutiny
Despite advanced security measures and AI-driven crowd tracking systems, the unfortunate Mahakumbh Mela stampede raises concerns about safety arrangements at such large-scale religious events. Authorities had installed hundreds of CCTV cameras, drone surveillance, and AI-based tracking to monitor crowd movements. However, the sheer volume of devotees exceeded expectations, leading to unmanageable congestion near the Sangam Ghat.
Experts have emphasized the need for better crowd dispersal strategies, improved barricading, and real-time monitoring to avoid such incidents in future religious gatherings.
Eyewitness Accounts and Devotee Reactions
Many devotees present at the site have expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. “We came here for a holy dip, but the crowd was uncontrollable. Suddenly, there was a push from behind, and people started falling,” said an eyewitness.
Another devotee added, “The security personnel were trying their best, but the crowd was too large. Many people lost their balance and fell.”
Past Stampede Incidents at Kumbh Melas
This is not the first time that a stampede at a Kumbh Mela has resulted in casualties. In 2013, a stampede at Allahabad Railway Station during the MahaKumbh Mela led to the death of 36 people. Similarly, in 2003, over 39 pilgrims lost their lives in a tragic stampede at the Nashik Kumbh Mela.
Government’s Response and Future Measures
The Uttar Pradesh government has assured strict action against any negligence and is reviewing security measures to prevent further mishaps. CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered a high-level probe into the Mahakumbh Mela stampede incident and directed officials to implement additional safety measures for the remaining days of the festival.
Authorities are also urging devotees to follow crowd management protocols and stay updated with official guidelines to ensure a safe pilgrimage experience.
The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 stampede is a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges posed by managing large religious gatherings. While efforts were made to deploy advanced security systems, the overwhelming number of devotees led to chaos, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.
As the nation mourns the loss of devotees, authorities must take immediate corrective actions to ensure safe and smooth conduct of the remaining Mahakumbh Mela events.
